It’s already too late

It’s already too late. They should have been arrested the second we knew they had murdered him.
There should never have been a question.
But just because it’s too late doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do something.

It’s already too late. We should have listened the first time. The hundredth time. The thousandth time.
We should have believed them.
But just because it’s too late doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do something.

It’s already too late. The list of names should have stopped once the first name was written.
Even one life is too many.
But just because it’s too late doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do something.

It’s already too late. We should never have enslaved other humans as if they were just objects.
We live atop a mountain they built.
But just because it’s too late doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do something.

It’s already too late. We had no right to invade, to “conquer,” to claim lands that aren’t ours.
Our guilt and apologies won’t change it.
But just because it’s too late doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do something.

It’s already too late. We had a million chances, a million peaceful requests, for justice.
And we ignored them.
But just because it’s too late doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do something.

It is already too late because it should never have happened. Any of it.
But it did and we let it.
Stand with them as they take their freedom; do something.
