On the way home from our dental check up we stopped at Espace Louis Derbré to check it out. Mum and I hadn’t been before and there are a whole bunch of Pokestops there, perfect chance to have a nose around.
Louis Derbré is a famous French artist, celebrated for his sculptures which take pride of place around the Mayenne area. The Espace Culturel in Ernée is where he created his sculptures, and you can go and wander around the area and view some of his work.
The art is stunning, very interesting to look at and very varied. From Christ being burned at the stake to dance and from tortured animals to loving embrace. There’s really something for everyone.
Of course, if you’re only in it for the Pokestops, you’ll be missing out on an interesting cultural experience. While there are about 7 Pokestops and 2 gyms around the espace culturel there were very few Pokemon and none spawned. So if you’re hoping to find an elusive Dragnoite next to a giant head, you might be waiting a long time!
Back to the sculptures though. I had seen photos of many of them before, and I had see Louis Debré’s work in towns around the area too, but it was amazing to see them up close in real life. They’re rough and ready when you get right next to them, I guess they’re designed to be viewed from a distance, but it’s still really interesting to get a feel of how he worked on them and to see the imperfections that make them so stunning.
Two great thinkers
Owl – my favourite! I love owls!
Proof I was there!
What do you think of his sculptures? Is it the kind of place that you’d like to visit? I’d certainly recommend it if you’re in the Mayenne area of France.
