The ExPat Experience: The Process Of Moving Abroad

Share how you went about moving abroad. Write about the visa process, or specific requirements that the country you were moving to needed. How long did it take? End with three tips on what you would recommend someone do before a move abroad, and how best to go about it.

As I’ve explained in previous posts, my moving wasn’t the usual style. I essentially just moved back in with my parents, they just happened to be abroad. Because of that this is probably going to be a short post!

Because I moved within Europe there was no visa process, massive bonus to being an EU citizen; no complications, no huge issues to deal with beyond the normal moving house palava.

It took two weeks to pack/throw out some junk/get everything in orderish and move. My step-dad came over to help which made everything much easier.

I was pretty sad when the morning arrived that I was actually leaving. Up until that moment it hadn’t really registered properly that I was going, and for a considerable time. I didn’t want to leave, but I had no choice.

My three tips for what to do before you move abroad and how best to go about are:

  1. Plan, plan, plan; I’ve said it before, but it’s true!
  2. Enlist help; preferably professional help in the form of movers & advisers.
  3. Check and double check; have a list, have many lists, and keep checking them!

That was a pretty short/boring post, huh? Apologies for that!
