I can’t speak French (so I’ll let the funky music do the talking)

I’m sure you’ve heard me moan before about people’s grammar, spelling and general disregard for language. Well…this is worse!

I’ve been in France… *counts on fingers*… about 6 weeks now, and the amount of Brits, who have been here far longer, and have made diddly squat effort to speak French is driving me doolally! Sure, it’s difficult, it’s not the nicest language (language of love my ass!), it has pronouns you’re not used to and confusing grammar structure at time but you live here!

I am absolutely, 100%, of the thinking that, should you go somewhere, be it on holiday or to live, you should learn the language. If you don’t, you should go home. I don’t care where you are, or how hard it is, it is just not ok to be somewhere and expect, nay demand, that they understand English. It’s selfish, obnoxious and disrespectful and it makes me mad!

In my experience English speakers are the absolute worst for this, we expect that, because ours is the language of business, that everyone should know it, and if they don’t then that’s their problem.

News Flash: It’s Not!

It is very much your problem. If you want to speak English and be understood, go somewhere that speaks English as it’s first language. Otherwise take your self absorbed bullsh*t to a French teacher and damn well learn. Don’t stand (or sit) and complain that a person in a shop didn’t understand you when you weren’t speaking their language, don’t moan about how hard it is with the language barrier when it’s your responsibility, don’t stressy because you can’t find an English speaking person to do some work for you when you should be speaking French.

It is not¬†on and boy does it enrage me (can you tell?!). And worse, many of the people who don’t bother to learn the language are the ones who sat about in the UK complaining about the “immigrants not learning English.” I now make a point of replying to the English in French when they bump into me at the supermarket and apologise in English. “Pardon” is not a difficult word, it’s not even hard to pronounce, so don’t expect me to chat in English just because I am. I may be a long way from fluent but at least I’m trying!

So, in conclusion: learn the language or STFU! The funky music will not do the talking.

-end rant-
